Do You Know What's in Your Vape Juice?

A growing number of people around the world are now using electronic devices and vaping to get the pleasure they once enjoyed from smoking tobacco products. These devices use a heat source, atomizer and e-juice to produce a flavorful, aromatic, vapor that people enjoy puffing. While the process of using the vaping devices is very simple, there is one thing about vaping devices that remains a mystery to many of the millions of people who use them each day. What are the ingredients that are used to make e juice or vape juice? The answer? E-liquid has four basic ingredients, VG, PG, flavorings and nicotine.

The Confusion on E Juice

Many people have no idea about what e-juice is made out of. This has led to some confusion as well-meaning vapers attempt to guess what it is. The most popular theory people have is that it is simply flavored water vapor. That is a close guess, but it can still lead to people sharing misinformation and developing weird beliefs about exactly what it is manufacturers put in the e-liquid that vapers use every day. Others frighten people by saying that e-liquid is made from poisonous antifreeze. This is false. E-liquid is made from food-grade chemicals and a little nicotine.

Check The Label

Reputable e-liquid manufacturers have never hidden the ingredients that make up their product. Plus, the laws in Europe, the United States and many other countries demand the ingredients be clearly listed on the label. What has caused some confusion, fear and misunderstanding is the chemical names of the ingredients often look intimidating and scary. However, those very chemicals are found in things people eat and drink every day. VG is an abbreviation for vegetable glycerin and PG is propylene glycol. The other main ingredient is flavoring which is found in most mass produced food. Buyers can also decide if the e-liquid they buy contains nicotine and if so, how much it contains.

Vegetable Glycerin

Most of the liquid in the vape juice people use in their atomizers comes from vegetable glycerin. In fact, VG can make up as much as 80% of the e-liquid by volume. This is what helps the e-cigs to produce the huge plumes of aromatic vapor when the user pulls on them and exhale. The vegetable glycerin is heated up and transformed into steam. For many users pulling in and blowing out the steam the VG produces is what gives them the satisfying, relaxing, feeling they want.

What Is Vegetable Glycerin

Glycerin can be made from almost any kind of fat. The vegetable glycerin used to make e-liquid is a natural substance. It is produced by processing vegetable oil. Although the vegetable glycerin in the e-liquid comes from vegetable oil, it is not in the form of an oil when it is used to make e-liquid. To make vegetable glycerin safe to inhale, when it is used in e-liquid it is an alcohol. The non-toxic VG in e-liquid is colorless and it has a sweet taste, but no smell. This type of vegetable glycerin is not designed for older atomizers. It is thick and viscous and does not wick well. Water would need to be added to it.

Common Uses Of Vegetable Glycerin

Vegetable glycerin is used in many food products. It is commonly added to foods as a sweetener. When food industry companies want to keep their products moist, vegetable glycerin is often used as an additive. Many pharmaceutical companies also use vegetable glycerin as well. It is regularly used in a number of medicines. Scientists have studied the relationship between vegetable glycerin and health for many years to ascertain if it could lead to health problems and it has been deemed safe for consumption. The dense vapor the VG in e juice produces is because of the large amount of liquid in it.

Propylene Glycol

A second type of fluid that is used to make the most popular types of e-liquid is propylene glycol, or PG. The ratio of vegetable glycerin to propylene glycol varies from one brand of e-liquid to another. E-liquid designed to be used in older atomizers tend to have more propylene glycol to make it less viscous. As with vegetable glycerin, the propylene glycol used in e-liquid is in the form of alcohol. Like vegetable glycerin, it is almost odorless, but it's flavor is somewhat sweet. Although it is used in food, medicine and several other types of products, it is added to keep them moist, not as a sweetener.

Propylene Glycol And Anti-Freeze

One of the best known uses of propylene glycol is as an ingredient in antifreeze. This is why when many people saw PG listed as an ingredient in e-liquid, they started the rumor that e-liquid contains antifreeze. It's an easy mistake to make if a person lacks clear information. Propylene glycol is a non-poisonous, food-grade product that is only one of antifreeze's many ingredients. Water is another of its ingredients. Antifreeze containing propylene glycol is safer for children and pets than other formulations of the coolant. Claiming that e-liquid contains antifreeze and so it's dangerous, is an opinion based on ignorance of the facts.

Propylene Glycol And Health

Since the 1940s, researchers have been studying the impact propylene glycol has on health. Their conclusion is PG is generally safe and can be inhaled or swallowed without causing any ill effects. However, some people may be more sensitive to propylene glycol than others and may have a negative reaction to brands of e-liquid that contain a high percentage of PG. In those cases, a simple solution would be to switch to a brand of e-liquid that contains less PG and more VG. Some people prefer more vegetable glycerin in their e-liquid because it produces thicker exhaled clouds. However, PG-rich e-liquid tend to be more flavorful.

Vape Juice Flavorings

The third ingredient in e-liquid is flavoring. Many people prefer vaping with e-liquid over smoking tobacco products because of the wide array of delicious-tasting and fabulous smelling types of e-liquid that are available. For them it's all about the taste and smell. The fluids used to make e-liquids don’t have a strong taste or smell. E-liquids get their delicious taste and pleasing, aromatic, smell from food-grade flavor additives. E-liquid manufacturers select the best flavors based on their years of research and feedback from consumers. Not all flavorings are designed to be inhaled. The oils used in e-liquid are also chosen because they can be safely inhaled.

Nicotine in Vaporizer Juice

The fourth ingredient in most brands of e-juice is nicotine. Manufacturers offer e-liquids with varying amounts of nicotine. It can be as little as zero nicotine to as much as 36 mg per milliliter or 1.8% of the e-liquid. This allows people to gradually reduce the amount of nicotine they use in their e-liquid until they get it down to zero, if you so desire. This control of the e-liquid's nicotine content makes it a valuable tool for controlling nicotine cravings and eliminating the desire for tobacco products. Users can still get the pleasing nicotine throat hit while gradually weaning themselves off of nicotine, should they want to.

Other Random Ingredients

Some vape juice brands add a wide range of ingredients to their products to make them unique. They include vitamins, coloring, caffeine and other types of supplements. Some e juice connoisseurs say these additional ingredients degrade the quality of the vaping experience. Ultimately, it is the consumer who gets to decide which ingredients they want in their e-liquid for better enjoyment of vaping.
